Benedict Canyon, and its Little Magical Château

Nestled alongside a canyon in Beverly Hills, this early-1990s home had the outward charm of a French country house. Inside, its young owners wanted something more personal: rooms with warmth, romance, and just enough enchantment to feel a little removed from everyday Los Angeles.
An antique reclaimed limestone fireplace supplied by Phoenician Stone became central to that vision. Its broad mantel, substantial curved supports, and richly carved central cartouche gave the living room a compelling focal point. Carefully retrofitted to fit the space, the fireplace brought its weathered surfaces and distinctive carving into a new chapter of its life.
The photographs taken before installation offer a glimpse of that transformation. Seen on its own, the surround’s sculptural details are immediately apparent. In the completed room, those same details find their setting among timber beams, warm fabrics, and sunlight falling across the stone.
Limestone wall cladding, also supplied by Phoenician Stone, carries that character across the room and up the chimney breast. Cream, honey, and soft grey tones mingle across the irregular stones. Their textured faces catch the changing light, while the fireplace’s more structured lines give the composition a sense of order.
Viewed through the library’s broad arched opening, the effect is especially beautiful: dark wood shelving frames the pale stone, with a richly colored sofa gathering the room around the hearth. It is an intimate, inviting scene that captures the fairytale quality the couple had hoped for. For this Beverly Hills home, the magic lies in those relationships: an antique fireplace fitted thoughtfully into its surroundings, limestone walls with depth and variation, and a room that invites people to settle in and stay.
